Is your online business in trouble because you believed an Internet marketing myth?

People make decisions every day based on commonly held beliefs and the Internet is no exception. Unfortunately, if you are one of the many thousands of people looking to earn money online, your beliefs may not be enough. In order to achieve online business success, in fact, you will have to set aside some commonly held myths about Internet marketing or business. Myths are stories passed around in culture that are not true but are often believed without question. Here are 2 common myths that you should question as they may stand in the way to earning money online:

1) If you build it they will come.
Many people venture into an online business believing that they just need to build a website on a catchy domain and they will become rich. While in the Internet's early years this may have held some truth, the reality is that with millions of websites on the Internet who will see yours? Internet marketing is all about getting your website, your product, or your business opportunity seen by others. You not only need to build a website (or use someone else's as an affiliate), you have to find a way to let people know it exists in a way that they will visit.

2) The more you spend the more you earn.
The majority of successful online business owners probably have a story about believing such a myth when they first started Internet marketing. The truth is people want to believe that their profits will be proportionate to the amount of money invested because that is easy. Almost everyone has a credit card and in North America at least we are not strangers to loading them up to their maximum. And if that is what it takes to earn money online, a little short term pain is well worth it! Sadly, while many venture into Internet marketing to improve their financial situation, their belief in the myth that the more they spend the more they will earn usually puts them into a much worse situation than before. Before long their online business efforts have to survive the new debt load before profits can even be considered. Having said that, once you are earning money online with your Internet business, additional marketing dollars invested wisely will likely help growth. "You have to spend money to make money" is true most of the time but it is also a different kind of statement then the myth we are talking about. Earning more money online then you invest in Internet marketing methods is the goal of every online business but in order to accomplish that you need to be smart with your expenditures. On a limited budget look for free or inexpensive advertising and spend only if you are ready to keep track of your ROI (return on investment).

Myths can be helpful. After all, probably one or more of them brought you into the Internet marketing industry in the first place. There are more myths than are described here, of course, but if you figure these two out you stand a good chance of earning money online with your business in spite of the others.
